NBA Legend and Business Leader Magic Johnson Shares Empowerment Message as Part of Black History Month

Earvin “Magic” Johnson spoke to 75 Inner City Youth from Breakthrough Ministries, Allstate and SodexoMagic Employees. Vivian Smith-Del Toro gave the children a learning exercise. All 75 children between the ages of 8-12 years of age had to write a resume and interview with the Chicago Public School Teachers to qualify for the tour. Over 8,000 Allstaters participated virtually and 2,000 were in person. Over 300 African American and Latino Allstaters personally welcomed the children throughout their day visit to the Allstate Headquarters.

NORTHBROOK, Ill., Feb. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Earvin “Magic” Johnson is speaking at several events on Allstate’s Northbrook, Ill campus discussing the role of education in his life, including the importance of staying in school, and the story of his transformation from athlete to business leader.

Seventy-five Breakthrough youth members from Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood will hear Magic Johnson’s personal story. Participating students were selected based on personal and academic achievements and come from Chicago Public Schools’ Jacob Beidler Elementary, Westinghouse College Prep, and Chicago West Side Christian School.

“This special opportunity with Magic Johnson provides an extraordinary experience within the context of our overall programs,” said Bill Curry, chief program officer at Breakthrough. “We are also looking forward to connecting with leaders at Allstate and SodexoMAGIC to help the kids better understand the opportunities made possible through hard work and dedication.”
